The traditional Vietnamese sandwich meets classic American fare. A creamy, pickled daikon and carrot slaw (DO CHAU SLAW) adorns this famously disheveled feast. It may sound fancy, but don't worry, it's still a sloppy joe. Here is a quick and easy weeknight meal you can make with regular ingredients found at the supermarket. Enjoy a simple dinner with worldly flair.
Serves 4
INGREDIENTS
4 hamburger buns
2 tbsp butter
1 tbsp oil
1 lb ground turkey or beef
1 onion, diced
1 bell pepper, any color, diced
Minced jalapeno pepper, optional
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 tsp grated ginger
¼ cup hoisin sauce
2 tbsp ketchup
2 tbsp soy sauce
1 tbsp honey
14.5 oz can petite diced tomatoes
½ can water
Salt and pepper to taste
DIRECTIONS
Butter hamburger buns and toast over medium heat in an empty skillet. Set aside.
In same skillet, heat oil and place turkey crumbles in an even layer, salt and pepper the meat, and cook until brown, about 5 minutes. Flip the meat over and continue cooking and breaking up larger crumbles. Add onion and cook until translucent, about 4 minutes. Add bell pepper and optional jalapeno and cook until soft, 2 minutes more. Then add in garlic and ginger and cook 30 seconds before adding in the remaining ingredients. Stir, bring to a boil, and reduce to simmer and cook 20 minutes or until sauce reaches a nice thick consistency.
Always taste for seasoning. Serve on toasted buns with do chua slaw.
